Bunnies in eggs

Happy Easter time! As far as I understand it, this time of year is all about chocolate, bizarre chicken-rabbit hybrids, and rebirth.

There’s various takes on the story of Jesus’s resurrection, including DH Lawrence’s brilliantly titled ‘The Escaped Cock‘ about dealing with post-resurrection ennui, as well as the widespread belief in Zombie Jesus Day.

But there’s plenty of examples of other characters coming back from the dead elsewhere, and to celebrate Easter in pop culture style, here are my ten favourite revivals from the world of television.

Buffy (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

Buffy climbing out of her grave

Buffy heroically sacrificed herself to save her sister and the world, then was mystically brought back to life by her friends who assumed (for no real reason) that she was eternally stuck in a Hell dimension. If you ask me, the idea that she’d end up somewhere other than the Elysian Fields sounds rather unfairly judgemental. Anyway, Buffy had to claw her way out of her coffin in a confused state, and found it hard to readjust to being one of the living, especially as she was (understandably) depressed at having been ripped out of Heaven by her friends. Still, not being dead led to good times for her, such as sex with Spike and a demonic musical. Life’s not all bad!

Kiss of Death

In bookmark, miss day, screenshots, tv kicks on October 31, 2011 at 9:50 pm

I think I’m pretty well known as the resident vampire nerd, even writing my university dissertation on vampires, way back in 2005 (before anyone accuses me of simply being a Twihard!)… so I thought it was high time I contributed a post dedicated to all the sexy vamps out there in the world of pop culture.

Known for their powerful alluring qualities and seduction of innocent virgins, vampires are the subject of many a human’s sexual fantasy. Whether you’re a fully fledged fang-banger or just v-curious, one of these delicious immortals is sure to tempt you.

Vampires are well known for their fluid sense of sexuality, so that’s why I’m kicking the list off with Lily Munster.  A sexy homemaker with all the right gothic connections, daughter of Count Dracula himself and quite possibly a close relation of the Bride of Frankenstein, Lily’s beautiful and devoted to those she loves.

Doppelgangland

In miss thropist, tv kicks on August 19, 2011 at 11:38 am

People have long been fascinated by the idea of having a double- and fiction is full of such examples.

Whether the doppelgänger is sinister or benign, important or incidental, they’re intriguing simply because they look exactly like someone else.

So I thought I’d discuss ten of my favourite doubles from the land of television. Cos not only am I a TV-gal, this is one concept that really does tend to come across better on-screen than on the page.

Willow (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

If you ever thought that one Willow simply wasn’t enough, then the episode where a spell goes awry and the gang has to deal with the appearance of vampire Willow from an alternative reality is for you! Wacky hijinks ensure, naturally, and Buffy et al find themselves uneasy about killing the vampire version of their friend.

The show seemed rather preoccupied with the idea of doubles, as evidenced by Angel/us’ duality, Faith taking on the role of Buffy’s “dark side” (exemplified by them swapping bodies) and Xander being split into his best and worst aspects at one point.

If I promise to go to church on Sunday, will you go with me on Friday night?

♪ if you live with me, I’ll die for you, and that’s a compromise ♪

Eh, I’ve just about had enough of serious questions, and the resultant discussions, this week. So let’s bring on the levity instead!

Round here that means that it’s time for another Search Term Sunday- looking at, and mocking, the things people have googled that brought them here this week.

We’re not in Kansas any more

A lot of people’s first response to Azerbaijan winning the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest was along the lines of “where’s that?” or, possibly, “that’s not a real place!”, and then- upon googling- it was more of a, “well that’s not in Europe” kind of feel.

But win they did, nonetheless:

This general geographical confusion has created an urge in me to set y’all some homework: I suggest you try to complete the sporcle challenge to name all the countries of the world (in fifteen minutes).

It also got me thinking about some legitimately made up locations too.

I feel that a sense of place can add a lot to a story, especially an ongoing one- as in a television or book series. When a story’s set in a nebulous, loosely defined location it often seems to lack something. But a good location doesn’t necessarily need to be real. Read the rest of this entry »

I wouldn’t trade you for another

In miss penn, tv kicks on April 3, 2011 at 11:00 pm

Happy Mothering Sunday! I hope y’all got up nice and early to steal flowers, scribble in cards and cobble together breakfast for the one that made you. Sadly, my Mummy Dearest is thousands of miles away, across oceans and mountains, so I’ve had to try and think of another way to show my love.

As any regular reader will have realised, TV is never far from my thoughts. TV is PCP’s religion, after all. So, as I thought about all the things I loved about my mother, all the things that made her so fab, I began to think about the multitude of small screen mums that weren’t so lovely and fab. For every apple-pie-making Marion Cunningham, there’s at least 10 mothers who would make out with your boyfriend/best friend or serve you arsenic pancakes. Not that I’m complaining – bad mothers make for goood tv.

So, Mum, here are 10 TV mothers that make me love you more than ever! (I certainly wouldn’t trade you for another – not even for Mrs. Cunningham.)

The Right Phenotype

In good vibrations, miss thropist, screenshots, tv kicks on March 2, 2011 at 12:54 pm

There can be some very questionable casting in TV shows and films, so I thought I’d focus instead on the gleefully fabulous examples of family members, young versions and so on which work well.

Sometimes it’s possible to work out exactly what makes the casting so perfect- the colouring, the jaw line, the body type- and sometimes it seems impossible to properly pinpoint.

And sometimes they just actually seem to have the same face.

Chuck’s mother (Gossip Girl)

Laura Harring (Mulholland Drive) was picture perfect casting for the birth mother of Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick). It’s perhaps the slightly feline eyes that makes them look so similar. Read the rest of this entry »

You’ve Got A Friend

In miss thropist, tv kicks on February 28, 2011 at 2:07 pm

This post was prompted by two things. Firstly reading this article on the lack of attention paid to studying cross-sex friendships (i.e. those between men and women) and, secondly, the most recent episodes of Gossip Girl.

The show has started to focus a lot of attention on the burgeoning friendship between Blair (Leighton Meester) and Dan (Penn Badgley). They teamed up to track down Juliet (Katie Cassidy) who was behind a vendetta against Serena (Blake Lively)- Blair’s best friend and Dan’s ex (and step-sister). Although Dan and Blair previously abhorred each other as they represent everything the other hates- Blair is a selfish schemer, while Dan is from Brooklyn- they have had brief moments of bonding in the past. Their mission to track down Juliet seems to have sparked something further however, as they became movie buddies while still claiming to not be friends. When they both got internships at the same magazine they initially plotted against each other in a bid to come out on top, but eventually patched things up and seem to have formed a solid friendship. The Lonely Hearts Club

Yea, it’s that time of year again. Of course, not everyone’s going to be playing the game of love this Valentines’ Day.

Even some of TV’s finest and prettiest are facing a tub of Ben and Jerrys and microwave meal for one tonight. So we’ve decided to give them a helping hand and increase their chances of being struck by Cupid’s arrow in the near future… Any takers?

The Cast System

In miss thropist, screenshots, tv kicks on February 4, 2011 at 6:28 pm

I’ve noticed some rather strange casting in television and film lately.

Whether they don’t make sense due to accent, age, beauty or race I want someone to clear them up for me- or at least for writers to learn to defend odd casting choices by including some kind of vague explanation in the script.

Confusion is not a good look on me, I end up resembling an emoticon with appendicitis.

Inception

Inception is a film about dreams which seems intent on trying to misdirect or confuse the audience, so obviously I was trying to pay attention to every detail.

To be honest I don’t really understand what all the fuss is about, the plot made sense to me- asides from one little detail.

Why was Michael Caine (Professor Miles) playing Marion Cotillard (Mal Cobb)’s father?

Sucked into yet another vampire show…

In miss penn, tv kicks on January 30, 2010 at 9:27 pm

Oh, TV, what are you doing to me? I love/hate it when I find another TV show to add to my must-watch list. As Miss Thropist often rants, why can’t there be more hours in the day?!

Anyway, I started watching The Vampire Diaries because I finally finished watching all my Whedon box-sets – Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly – (will watch the final episode of Dollhouse tomo!!) – which has dominated my show-watching life since forever. Well, since August.

I felt good at having conquered those shows, not least because now I totally get so many more geek comments than I did before (it’s like learning a language) – for one, in this recap I’m looking at a VD ep I haven’t watched yet there’s a ref to Firefly‘s Zoe and Wash and a leaf floating on the wind or summat and two weeks ago, that would have been totally lost on me, but now I KNOW ALL – and haven’t really jumped on a new TV obsession yet, kinda enjoying being able to make mouse-dents in the mountains of unwatched DVDs I amassed since I got into the Whedonverse, and taking eps of ongoing shows I like (Dollhouse, How I Met Your Mother) as they come.

But there’s only 12 episodes of VD so far, and I expected not to like it that much because it seemed like vamp overkill and very much in the vein of Twilight, with the whole new guy in school turns out to be a vampire, heroine’s small-town life suddenly gets all mystical (yea yea, I know the VD books came first)… I mean what could be better than Buffy, Angel and True Blood?

Plus, although I certainly think Ian Somerhalder is veeerrry purdy (and have since Young Americans, sigh), he didn’t look too photogenic in the stills (see above) and the other guy, Paul Wesley, didn’t dazzle me either. And the girl (Nina Dobrev) seemed annoying.

It seemed a safe foray, I was bound to be bored by it, then I could commit myself to a new obsesh (thinking Supernatural). So I started watching the episodes, mainly using them as background buzz for the Important Things I Need to Do. But it slyly grew on me. It’s not the best, but it’s not bad either.

The trio are all far prettier than the stills would suggest, Dobrev is less annoying because she has a kinda deep voice and isn’t all miserable like Kirsten Stewart’s Bella Swan… and there’s an intriguing mystery that build and builds with each episode.

(And seriously, where DOES the CW find all these super-pretty boys and girls?!! If they were willing to donate some to Eastenders I might be willing to watch it. But no one deserves that, not even Vanessa Abrams from Gossip Girl. Or maybe she does.)

I know I must be hooked because its 4.15am, I’m sleepy and already a little hungover from Saturday night drinking, and I am Wikipedia-ing and Googling everything VD like a loon.

Yea its an amalgamation of other CW shows (but aren’t they all of each other in a way these days?) and popular trends (vampires, YA fiction-to-screen adaptation), and yea the dialogue is a bit uneven, and downright clunky at times (odd, as super-verbosity-spinning Kevin Williamson of Dawson’s Creek is writing the scripts), and there is plenty of overwrought drama… but overall it just works for me.

Somerhalder is standout (and deliciously camp) as Damon, the evil vampire brother, whom you can never be quite sure about, and Paul Wesley is endearing and sexy as the good vampire brother (he makes Edward Cullen seem like SUCH a creepy emo)… and they have decent brotherly chemistry.

I haven’t got a strong sense of the vampire mythology yet, doesn’t seem as rich as True Blood nor as sacrilegious as Twilight. Which the show totally refs (and riffs). Damon even reads one of the Twilight books and wonders what’s so special about “this Bella chick” and that Edward seems pussy-whipped (although he probably didn’t say pussy, but that what my memory’s telling me).

There’s also been a succession of interesting guest stars (Legally Blonde’s Matthew Davis, Gilmore Girls‘ Arielle Kebbel, Life as We Know It‘s Sean Faris, Firefly‘s Gina Torres,The L Word‘s Mia Kirshner, Buffy‘s Bianca Lawson, Felicity/Dollhouse‘s Chris William Martin) … and there are more to come (The OC‘s Melinda Clarke).

Now I feel a bit guilty about not paying better attention right from the start! These vamps are sneaky creatures… you never know when they’re going to bite you next.

(And oh yes, Miss Thropist, I think you ought to try a few eps out too… but you should give it until at least episode six, when Damon dances with his shirt off. If you aren’t hooked by then, you never will be. Oh, hell, you can just watch that bit here if you want a spoiler-free taster.)
