Bunnies in eggs

Happy Easter time! As far as I understand it, this time of year is all about chocolate, bizarre chicken-rabbit hybrids, and rebirth.

There’s various takes on the story of Jesus’s resurrection, including DH Lawrence’s brilliantly titled ‘The Escaped Cock‘ about dealing with post-resurrection ennui, as well as the widespread belief in Zombie Jesus Day.

But there’s plenty of examples of other characters coming back from the dead elsewhere, and to celebrate Easter in pop culture style, here are my ten favourite revivals from the world of television.

Buffy (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

Buffy climbing out of her grave

Buffy heroically sacrificed herself to save her sister and the world, then was mystically brought back to life by her friends who assumed (for no real reason) that she was eternally stuck in a Hell dimension. If you ask me, the idea that she’d end up somewhere other than the Elysian Fields sounds rather unfairly judgemental. Anyway, Buffy had to claw her way out of her coffin in a confused state, and found it hard to readjust to being one of the living, especially as she was (understandably) depressed at having been ripped out of Heaven by her friends. Still, not being dead led to good times for her, such as sex with Spike and a demonic musical. Life’s not all bad!

It’s time, once again, to delve into the mixed grab bag of what people have been tapping into google in order to end up here over the last fortnight.

Am I search term… or Muppet?

In miss penn, pcp news, screenshots, tv kicks on March 26, 2012 at 3:17 am

Damn it, it’s Monday instead of Sunday again. I got NOTHING done yesterday. I blame the clocks “springing forward”… and the Muppets. Most of my Sunday was spent obsessing over Muppets.

I finally got around to watching The Muppets, which was just… joyful. It was everything good and it had so many of my favourite things!

So, instead of analysing such gems as make your cake look like forest with fairies and little faces are called pixie faces, or answering questions like is jensen ackles a redneck?, this edition of Search Term Sunday is all about the Muppets.

stack of pancakes

It’s Pancake Day! A DAY ENTIRELY ABOUT EATING PANCAKES. (And, y’know, preparing for Lent and stuff, but mostly: PANCAKES.)

I love pancakes, as does (I assume) everyone. They’re tasty, light enough that they don’t fill you up immediately, and so versatile that you get to try out lots of fascinating food combinations. THEY’RE BASICALLY A TASTY VERSION OF PILOT SEASON, BUT IN YOUR MOUTH INSTEAD OF ON THE SCREEN.

Which I think is why they seem to be used as a subtle symbol of affection in season six of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Food, and particularly balanced breakfasts, took on more significance in the later seasons, when Buffy (and the other Scoobies) became responsible for raising her younger sister (formerly a blob of mystical energy), Dawn.

Willow, Dawn, Buffybot and Tara breakfast scene from Bargaining (Part One)

In ‘Bargaining (Part One)’, Tara’s pancakes were part of the pleasant domesticity she and Willow tried to create for Dawn after Buffy’s death, will the help of the Buffybot’s mega-sandwich making skills and Xander’s tools. After Willow and Tara broke up due to Willow’s magic addiction, Tara maintained a good relationship with Dawn.

Kiss of Death

In bookmark, miss day, screenshots, tv kicks on October 31, 2011 at 9:50 pm

I think I’m pretty well known as the resident vampire nerd, even writing my university dissertation on vampires, way back in 2005 (before anyone accuses me of simply being a Twihard!)… so I thought it was high time I contributed a post dedicated to all the sexy vamps out there in the world of pop culture.

Known for their powerful alluring qualities and seduction of innocent virgins, vampires are the subject of many a human’s sexual fantasy. Whether you’re a fully fledged fang-banger or just v-curious, one of these delicious immortals is sure to tempt you.

Vampires are well known for their fluid sense of sexuality, so that’s why I’m kicking the list off with Lily Munster.  A sexy homemaker with all the right gothic connections, daughter of Count Dracula himself and quite possibly a close relation of the Bride of Frankenstein, Lily’s beautiful and devoted to those she loves.

Sunday burning

In miss penn, pcp news on September 19, 2011 at 12:07 am

No, I’m not in a particularly heretic mood. But it is a Sunday and I’m on fire. At least, my back was, and now it resembles a lacy red lizard, a lasting souvenir of my recent trip to Spain. (Part of the reason PCP was taken over by Emmas last weekend.)

You’re all on fire too – but in the good, non-peeling way. I’m liking you weirdo Googlers this week, because you have given me the chance to think about all kinds of pop cultural goodies and stare slack-jawed at sexy scantily-clad men and women, in the name of “blogging”. Keep it coming!

Sing a Song of Sixpence

In good vibrations, miss thropist, tv kicks on July 8, 2011 at 9:43 am

I love musicals. Not indiscriminately, but plenty of my favourite films (from Cat Ballou to Guys and Dolls) are musicals, I’ll forgive shows like Glee and Flight of the Conchords a lot of flaws thanks to the musical numbers, I adore special song and dance filled episodes of TV shows (like Buffy and Scrubs) and I’ve watched Dr Horrible’s Sing-along Blog and Trapped in the Closet more times than I should be comfortable admitting in public.

I’m also a total sucker for unexpected musical moments in the midst of dialogue. So here are ten of my favourite television episodes which feature people randomly bursting into song.

Fan Death: Thoroughly Modern Run of the Mill-y

In fan death, miss thropist, tv kicks on June 28, 2011 at 9:17 pm

I quite enjoyed Modern Family, I watched all the episodes of the first two seasons, and they made me laugh. Nonetheless there’s several things about the show which irk me, and I’ve decided not to continue watching when it returns in the autumn.

And I figured that a discussion of why that is deserved no less than the mantle of Fan Death.

If you haven’t seen the show, it’s a mockumentary sitcom about family life. The patriarch- Jay- has two grown up children. Claire, his daughter, is married to a guy named Phil and they have three kids- Haley, Alex and Luke. Jay’s son Mitchell and his partner, Cameron, have an adopted daughter called Lily. Jay’s also remarried since his divorce to a (younger) Colombian woman, Gloria, who has a son named Manny. Read the rest of this entry »

Dream On

In miss thropist, tv kicks on June 21, 2011 at 8:45 pm

The height of summer-which we’re technically in, even if the weather might make you think otherwise of late- is supposed to be a lazy, hazy time of year. Ideally it would be full of siestas and naps in the sun. And possibly crazy adventures in the forest involving fairies and an ass.

Sadly I’m unlikely to get the chance to sleep away my summer, but at least I’ve got my favourite dream sequences from TV shows to sustain me.

 Restless’, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

After battling a demonic cyborg named Adam, by combining their essences, the core members of the Scooby gang (Buffy, Willow, Xander and Giles) decided to have a movie night. They crashed out early, and ‘Restless’ gave the audience a chance to investigate each subconscious in turn. The characters’ fears and weaknesses were examined in a way ripe for interpretation, while the surreal nature of dreams was maintained with devices such as confusing French, a musical number and the cheese guy. Father’s Day is celebrated in much of the world on the third Sunday in June- which this year is June 19th.

As I did for Mother’s Day, it’s time to trawl through television to find the best parental examples.

Angel (Angel)

Despite the unplanned mystical conception of his son Connor, Angel was overjoyed to be a father- in part because, as a vampire, he had assumed that he’d never get to be a parent.

He got all excited about their future together- even getting his son a personalised hockey shirt- until he was overcome with despair when his old enemy, Holtz, snatched the baby and headed off into a hell dimension with him.

US Mother’s Day was on May 8th, so we might be a day late with this post but, as any good mum will tell you, that’s better than never!

Miss Penn already discussed the worst television mothers for Mothering Sunday back in April, but this time we’d like to focus on the good ‘uns:

Abbey Bartlet (The West Wing)

Dr Bartlet was definitely the matriarch of The West Wing, with all the female characters in awe of, and inspired by, her.

Any mother character played by Stockard Channing (Rizzo in Grease) is obviously going to be a bad ass momma bear, and that was enhanced by Aaron Sorkin’s dialogue.

Happy Easter Sunday y’all!

I must admit that Easter celebrations have never really made all that sense to me, but if you’re into pretending that rabbits lay eggs and enjoy hunting for melted chocolates in apparently unlikely places then I hope you have an enjoyable time doing so.

The stuff that I’ve been searching for- silly search terms- are far easier to find. It’s much like looking for hay in a haystack, as soon as you take a look at the searches people have performed in order to bring them to this site you’re sucked into a wildly weird world.

Let’s give it a whirl:

Get Sunday schooled

In art attack, bookmark, comical, miss penn, screenshots, tv kicks on April 17, 2011 at 8:00 am

The search terms that lead people to PCP typically make me snigger or roll my eyes, because they’re so bizarre. Sometimes they make me smile, because they remind me of something pleasant, like a classic episode of a favourite TV show. But lately, I’ve noticed they’ve also been serving as little lessons, opening my eyes and mind to things I’d never have imagined otherwise and teaching me obscure phrases in foreign languages.

So this Sunday, here’s a chance to get schooled, along with the usual dirty laughs.

Sunday Circus

In bookmark, fasc-ion, good vibrations, miss thropist, pcp news, screenshots, tv kicks on March 27, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Happy Sunday all! Hope you’re enjoying yours.

As far as I’m concerned, Sundays are usually for relaxation and recovery. It’s also a good day to check in with your friends- preferably in person with piles of greasy food and lots of liquid.

Sundays are the perfect day for everyone to share their stories of debauchery from the latest week (or, more likely, the weekend) and to swear that they’re never making the same mistakes again.

But if they didn’t, then we’d have nothing to talk about the next Sunday. So mostly the quitters quit quitting, and life goes on with its circular motions.

Since it’s Sunday, it’s time to go through the sinful and strange search terms of the week.

I’d ask everyone to promise to bookmark some stuff instead of abusing google in this fashion, but where would the fun be next weekend if that happened?

You’ve Got A Friend

In miss thropist, tv kicks on February 28, 2011 at 2:07 pm

This post was prompted by two things. Firstly reading this article on the lack of attention paid to studying cross-sex friendships (i.e. those between men and women) and, secondly, the most recent episodes of Gossip Girl.

The show has started to focus a lot of attention on the burgeoning friendship between Blair (Leighton Meester) and Dan (Penn Badgley). They teamed up to track down Juliet (Katie Cassidy) who was behind a vendetta against Serena (Blake Lively)- Blair’s best friend and Dan’s ex (and step-sister). Although Dan and Blair previously abhorred each other as they represent everything the other hates- Blair is a selfish schemer, while Dan is from Brooklyn- they have had brief moments of bonding in the past. Their mission to track down Juliet seems to have sparked something further however, as they became movie buddies while still claiming to not be friends. When they both got internships at the same magazine they initially plotted against each other in a bid to come out on top, but eventually patched things up and seem to have formed a solid friendship. Boys on TV

In miss penn, tv kicks on November 19, 2010 at 1:30 am

My increasingly heavy TV-watching schedule almost has me wishing for cancellation. In recent months I’ve became enamoured of The Big Bang Theory, Chuck, White Collar and Modern Family, and been compelled to rewatch Quantum Leap and My So-Called Life. I’m beginning to dabble with Cougar Town, Fringe and Carnivale. Add that to Gossip Girl, Supernatural, How I Met Your Mother (which is better, thank god), The Vampire Diaries and Glee… no wonder I seem to never have any time to do the things I can’t do while watching those programs!

Anyway, usually hand-in-hand with my love for a show is a crush on one of the characters. And due to my steadfast dedication to watching every episode (and alternately dramatic and pathetic love-life), I often feel like so-and-so character is my boyfriend. I don’t just wish he was, he is, as we spend some quality time together on my sofa, or in my bed, and I look lovingly into his eyes, magnanimously tolerating the latest hussy who imagines she’s won his interest.

Here are my top 10 TV boyfriends, past and present – as in life, one at a time isn’t always enough…

Scott Bakula/Dr. Sam Beckett – Quantum Leap

My first TV love, and maybe my last. With a huge heart, puppy dog eyes, a rather buff bod, six (or seven?) doctorates and complete ease with his inner (and sometimes outer) femininity, this quantum leaper is everything I could ever hope for in a beau. He sets right what once when wrong… and with style. It doesn’t get better than that

Henry Winkler/Arthur “the Fonz” Fonzarelli – Happy Days

As a little kid, Happy Days was my very favourite show and the Fonz was a big part of why (it certainly wasn’t whiney Richie Cunningham). Seeing Henry Winkler grey (and crucified) in Scream cured the crush… but for a time, the leather-jacketed, smooth-talking greaser was cool and cute personified in my books. I dreamed of bringing such a guy home one day. I also fancied Fonzie’s movie counterpart Danny Zuko – funnily enough Winkler was the first choice for that role.

Jared Leto/Jordan Catalano – My So-Called Life

“Why are you are like that? Like, the way you are?” How I once hoped that the object of my affection would stare into my eyes and ask just that, implying my innate depth with inarticulate, puppyish awe. Or simply be as beautiful. Jordan Catalano is a classic case of still waters run shallow… but really, does it matter with a face like that? At 16, I could have forgiven him anything… probably even sleeping with my best friend in the backseat of his car. Or writing a song about said car instead of me. But not these days, now I’d want someone a little more sensitive, someone like…

Adam Brody/Seth Cohen – The OC

Oh Seth, how I miss thee. I loved him from the moment I saw him meekly sitting in his bedroom, looking up at Ryan Atwood like he was a knight in shining armour, and I loved him even more when he opened his mouth, and self-deprecating, witty geekery flowed out. I keep hoping he will pop up on one of my current favourite shows. And really, why couldn’t he? After all, The OC honcho Josh Schwartz created and produces Gossip Girl and Chuck. On GG, Seth could be Dan’s bromantic interest (to Nate’s chagrin) or a nice boyfriend for Blair, playing with ponies in her bedroom and infuriating Chuck Bass (Seth would NEVER tell Blair she’d been ridden hard and put away wet). He could be Chuck Bartowski’s superspy cousin or a Buy More employee, putting his comic book retail experience to good use while pondering the next dream. Seth Cohen is the ultimate gorgeous geek, and I’ll never tire of him.

Mike Bailey/Sid Jenkins – Skins

In a way, Sid is bizarro Seth. Or simply the British version. Both are dorky, in the shadow of their best friend and have (initially) unrequited crushes on girls that are apparently out of their league. But where Seth is actually just out-and-out cute (IRL he’d never have problems with girls), Sid’s an acquired taste… and sometimes downright terrible. He repeatedly breaks the heart of the one girl who loves him just the way he is, betrays his incapable BFF, and despite his nerdiness, he’s not even doing well in school. But beneath it all, he has a good heart, and will go out of his way for those he loves… from stealing coffins to flying to New York. He’s just himself, and you’ve got to love that. And his silly beanie!

David Boreanaz/Angel – Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel

I got into the whole Buffy thing backwards. I avoided watching much of it during the peak of its popularity, but last summer, I finally gave into Miss Thropist’s constant referencing… well the world’s constant referencing really… and consumed the Whedonverse en masse. But even before, I thought Mr. Boreanaz was “oddly” attractive. He was just perfect in Dido’s “White Flag”, I had no idea what was going in that video, but whatever, he was just the kind of guy you’d quietly pine over and wonder how to reach out to. Then I saw his debut in Buffy… wow! So James Deanish, so achingly beautiful… he aged out of that pretty quickly (especially when you’re watching back to back), but Angel just grew in my estimation. He’s the ultimate tortured soul, he can kick just about anyone’s butt, and when he loves, he loves hard, whether it’s his soulmate or his son. And his awful dancing and singing is irresistibly endearing…

Josh Radnor/Ted Mosby – How I Met Your Mother

The main reason I got so into How I Met Your Mother was because I really related to Ted… so much so that I considered becoming an actress and campaigning for the part of the Mother. I thought his quest was so romantic… it’s so often the single woman in a sitcom that’s on the hunt for a husband… and I loved the storytelling framing devices. I even like Ted’s chronic douchiness – I find his obsession with architecture and appreciation of literature appealing. Everyone should be passionate and peculiar! Like Ted, I want a massive story with whoever I end up with… the kind of story it would take years to explain to my (unfortunate) children. None of this “we met in a bar… ba-boom” crap. So don’t disappoint me, show (or love gods).

Robert Sheehan/Nathan Young – Misfits

I really shouldn’t like Nathan… he’s foulmouthed, crude and sex-obsessed. Just the qualities that would usually have me running a mile. But he’s also rather beautiful, Irish-accented… and beneath the thick layers of jerkitude… a good egg. He’s oddly faithful to the chavvy but kind Kelly, and quickly accepting and protective of his confused little brother. For all his flaws, this immortal Misfit does the right thing… eventually.

Johnny Galecki/Dr. Leonard Hofstader - The Big Bang Theory

Physically, Leonard’s not quite my type. While I like his face, he seems too short. But I’m willing to overlook that because I’m a total sucker for scientific minds. Particularly scientific minds with a penchant for pop culture. I’d love to curl up on this doctor’s couch (in Sheldon’s spot, preferably) snarfing Chinese takeout, listening to his theories on the origins of the universe in between instalments of Indiana Jones (bar the most recent one, of course). I quite like the people he hangs out with too… even the blonde waitress whose likely to prove quite a rival for his affections.

Zachary Levi/Charles “Chuck” Bartowski – Chuck

If they couldn’t simply export Seth Cohen to Chuck, then they should have Adam Brody play Chuck’s half-brother via his father Stephen, who was played by Scott Bakula. Then I could properly enjoy an incestuous multi-crush on the hottest, geekiest family on TV. Chuck Bartowski has much in common with both Seth and Sam. Like Seth, he’s unsure of himself, deeply romantic and really into comic books. Like Sam, he’s constantly thrown into the deep end and forced to inhabit different roles to save the day… and he’s a genius with hidden skills. Most importantly, like my other gorgeous geeks, Chuck has strong family values. The only thing I’d change about him is his emotional verbal diarrhoea, especially during high-risk situations… because it’s the kind of thing that’s liable to get him killed one day. Possibly by me.

To the bottom of a hole of a deeper well

In miss thropist, tv kicks on June 6, 2007 at 2:06 am

In case you didn’t get the memo, I am a pretty huge Buffy and Angel fan. Emphasis on the former. But Angel is probably up there in my list of top 10 TV shows. Or top 20 definitely.

And I’ve been engaged in my own little (slightly huge) rewatch lately. Which, by the way, wasn’t an incredibly effective revision strategy.

I’m now up to season 5 of Angel, which a lot of fans don’t really like that much. Personally I prefer it to the third and fourth seasons, but I can understand why people wouldn’t really like the fifth season- the slightly forced inclusion of Spike, Lorne and Harmony; the random change of scenery; the lack of Cordy; the quite random recharacterisation of Gunn; the inconsistency of the memory loss; the possible complete ignoring of the show’s own mythology… and some pretty dudtastic episodes like ‘The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco’, ‘Why We Fight’ and ‘The Girl In Question’. However, there are also some really good things about it- I think the humour is great, and although the series as a whole is quite hit-and-miss I like that they at least got creative. And there are some fantastic episodes. And the fact that I was already quite the fan of Spike, Lorne and Harmony probably doesn’t hurt.

‘Why We Fight’ is probably the episode that annoys me the most. The central character is annoying, and it also fucks with the show’s mythology quite a lot. As have previous episodes, like ‘Somnambulist’ which creates an extra childe of Angel/us who was meant to be fraffling around with him and the gang in the past, yet I don’t think he (Penn) is ever mentioned before or after. But I think messing with the mythology is more acceptable in season 1 when the show is establishing itself than in season 5. Also, ‘Why We Fight’ is largely set in flashbacks on a submarine. And Spike has bad hair. So, you know, there’s that.

But then comes ‘Smile Time’. It featues puppet Angel with a detachable nose. And a puppeteer being manipulated by evil puppet demons. There has to be love for that.

And after that comes ‘A Hole In The World’, which might actually be the best Angel episode ever. I’m not sure I would say it’s a favourite, but it’s amazing- in the way that ‘The Body’ (the Buffy episode dealing with the death of Buffy’s mother) is clearly fantastic. Watching it basically consists of me sobbing for the entire 40-something minutes. I can’t recommend it highly enough, even if that’s not usually your idea of a good time. I expect it doesn’t have much of an emotional effect if you don’t care about the characters (like do people who watch Serenity without watching Firefly understand how great Wash is?), but it’s intense.

And Wesley wears an incredibly unattractive jumper throughout the episode, but it doesn’t annoy me. It seems poignant I guess in a silly way, the fact that these massive and important things can happen, and your memory will be slightly jarred by the sequins or whatever they were.

It also seems to make Spangel pretty cannon(ish). But I’d rave about this episode even without that. Seriously.

Winifred Burkle once told me, after a sinful amount of Chinese food and in lieu of absolutely nothing, “I think a lot of people would choose to be green, your shade, if they had the choice.” If I hear one note — one quarter-note — that tells me you had any involvement, these two won’t even have time to kill you.” - Lorne

Cavemen win. Of course cavemen win” - Fred
